Deendayal Wood Carving

Deendayal Wood Carving is situated out in Village Colkani. We are part of the Danagadi Tehsil, which is a bit of a drive from the main city. Our workshop is easy to spot because it is near the Post Office in Chitri. Living and working in the village is different than being in the city. It is much quieter here, and we have more space to keep our wood. We specialize in wood carving, a skill that has been passed down through several generations of our family. We don't have a big factory. It is mostly just a large shed behind the main house. We use manual tools to carve out patterns and shapes. It takes a lot of patience and our hands often get calloused and sore. We don't have a marketing department or a fancy logo. Most of our work comes from people in the neighboring villages or traders who come out this way to see what we have made. The air is cleaner here, but the work is still hard. We spend many hours sitting on the ground, focusing on a single piece of wood. Sometimes we listen to the birds or the cows while we work. We don't have a mission or a fancy plan. We just carve wood because it is what we know how to do. It’s a slow life, but it suits us well enough for now.
