Our shop is tucked away in the Bairathi Complex at number 22. It’s right in the middle of Chameliwala Market on M.I. Road, so it stays pretty hectic outside most of the time. If you know that area, you know how the traffic and the crowds get. Inside here, though, things are a bit quieter. We spend our hours looking at small things under magnifying lamps. There are always trays of silver and gold pieces sitting on the counters, and we spend a lot of time polishing or checking stones. It’s a small space, but we’ve managed to fit everything we need into it over the years. We’ve known the other shopkeepers in the complex for ages, and someone is always popping in for a quick chat or a cup of tea. It’s not like those big corporate jewelry stores you see in the malls. We don’t have a massive staff or a security guard at every turn. It’s just us doing the work we know how to do. Some days are slow, and we just reorganize the displays, while other days, we have three families in here at once looking for wedding sets. We try to keep things simple and honest. Dealing with jewelry means you have to be careful with the details, and that’s what we do day in and day out here in Jaipur. It’s just the way we run the place.
