Down in the RIICO Industrial Area, things are always moving. Our spot is at H-1 493-A. It’s a big dusty plot where we handle tyres all day. You can smell the burnt rubber from the road. We do a lot of retreading, which is hard work and gets your clothes very dirty. The machines are old and loud, and they take up most of the floor space. We have stacks of old truck tyres piled up in the back. It’s hot in the summer because of the metal roof. We drink a lot of water and take breaks under the one tree near the fence. This isn't a place for fancy clothes or clean hands. We are usually covered in black soot by noon. We get a lot of drivers coming through looking for a quick fix or a replacement. We don't have a waiting room, just a couple of old tyres to sit on. The work is heavy and our backs hurt by the end of the shift. But we have been doing this a long time and we know how to handle the rubber. RIICO is a tough area, but it’s where the work is. We don't bother with much paperwork beyond the basic receipts. Most of our tools have been with us since we opened. It’s just a regular yard where we get the job done.
