Our office is part of the big Rajasthan State Industrial Development & Investment Corporation Limited setup in Jaipur. Most people just call it RIICO. It’s a large building and there are always lots of people walking through the hallways with files and stamps. We work in one of the departments there. It’s very routine. We come in, sign the register, and start going through the applications or the maps of the industrial areas. It’s not the most exciting work, but it’s important for the city. Jaipur is growing so fast, and we see it happening through the papers on our desks. The canteen downstairs has okay food, and that’s where we all catch up on the gossip. We don't use a lot of fancy words when we talk to the business owners who come in. We just tell them what documents they need and how long it might take. There is a lot of red tape, which can be frustrating for everyone. But we are just the staff trying to keep the system moving. Some days the heat in Jaipur is unbearable, even with the coolers on. We just keep our heads down and wait for the weekend. It's a steady government-style job and we’ve been doing it for years. We know the rules and we just stick to them. It keeps the city running in its own way.
