Sharma Textile

The shop here in Sector-8 Pratap Nagar is usually filled with the smell of new fabric. Sharma Textile is a place where we spend our hours unrolling bolts of cloth and showing them to whoever walks in from the street. Pratap Nagar is a busy area, so we get all kinds of people looking for something specific for a wedding or just everyday wear. We have shelves that go all the way to the ceiling, stacked with different colors and patterns. Sometimes it’s hard to find the exact piece someone saw last week, but we eventually dig it out from the bottom of a pile. We don't have a big staff, so if three people come in at once, everyone has to wait their turn while we measure out the meters. The cutting table is scarred from years of scissors running across it. We often have scraps of thread stuck to our clothes by lunchtime. It’s not a fancy showroom with bright spotlights; we just use the regular tube lights that flicker sometimes. On hot days, the door stays open to catch whatever breeze comes down the street, even if it brings in some noise from the traffic. We’ve been here long enough that we know which fabrics hold up well and which ones are tricky to sew. It’s honest work and keeps us busy from morning till the shutters go down at night.
