Mts is over on 150-feet Road in Jajmau. We are tucked away inside the Zaz Tannery Compound. It’s a very industrial part of Kanpur, so there’s always a lot of noise and trucks moving around. The smell of leather is pretty much everywhere here. We’ve been operating out of this spot for quite some time. It’s a gritty place, not like those clean offices you see in movies. There’s dust on the windows and the floors are stained, but that’s just how it is in a tannery area. We deal with a lot of heavy materials every day. My brother and I manage the daily stuff, from checking the stock to talking to the drivers. The heat in Kanpur can be brutal in the summer, especially inside the compound. We just drink a lot of water and keep going. It’s a tough business and you have to have thick skin. We don’t spend money on fancy signs or decor. Everything here is for a purpose. Most of our neighbors are doing the same kind of work. We help each other out when a machine breaks or someone needs an extra hand. It’s a real community of workers. We don’t really think about being corporate. We just try to get the orders ready on time. It’s a simple life, even if the work is hard. If you come by, just look for the compound gates and the 150-feet Road sign.
