Meena Handicraft is based out in Village Khurd, which is near Kukas in the Amer tehsil of Jaipur district. It is a bit far from the main city, so it’s much quieter here, except for the birds and the occasional tractor. We work out of a simple building where we do mostly handwork. The village life is slow, and we follow that pace. Most of our days are spent sitting on mats, working on various crafts that Jaipur is famous for. It gets very hot in the summer, so we start early in the morning and take a long break in the middle of the day when the sun is too strong. We have a few local people who come in to help us with the bigger orders. Our workshop doesn't have any fancy machines; we mostly use our hands and basic tools. There is usually a lot of thread or paint around, depending on what we are making that week. We don't have a storefront like the shops in the city. People who want to find us usually have to ask around the village. It is a very basic setup, but it works for what we do. We like being out here in the fresh air instead of the crowded markets. It’s a practical way to live and work. We just do our best with what we have. Sometimes the rains make it hard to get work done.
