Maity Jewls is tucked away in M S B Ka Rasta, right in the middle of Marujee Ka Chok in Jhoribazar. This part of the city is famous for jewelry, so we are surrounded by a lot of history and other shops that have been here for generations. Our space is small, as most shops in Jhoribazar are, but it’s full of character. We spend our days working on small pieces, looking through eyeglass loupes at stones and metal. It’s a lot of sitting and focusing on tiny details. The streets outside are always packed with tourists and locals, and the sound of bells and scooters is constant. We’ve got old wooden counters where we show our work to anyone who comes in. Sometimes it takes hours to help someone pick out a single ring, but we don’t mind the time. It’s part of the trade. We don't use big machines for everything; a lot of what we do is just by hand with old tools that have been around a long time. The lighting inside is bright so we can see what we are doing, which makes the shop stand out when it gets dark outside. It’s a tight-knit community here in the bazaar, and we’ve known the shopkeepers next door for years. We just keep doing what we know how to do, day in and day out.
