Jamila Fancy & General Store

Jamila Fancy & General Store is sitting right in the middle of the Main Market in Kotkhawada. Being on Tonk Road means we see a lot of people passing through Jaipur. We call it a fancy store because we keep things like bangles, ribbons, and small gifts alongside the usual soaps and detergents. It’s a colorful little place, though it’s a bit cramped with all the boxes. We’ve been at this address for years and know most of the families around here. My wife helps me pick out the bangles and cosmetics that the local women like. We don't have any big marketing plans or anything like that. We just open the shutters in the morning and see who comes in. Sometimes the stock takes a long time to arrive from the city, which can be annoying. The floor is just concrete and we have a small stool for people to sit on if they’re looking at jewelry. It’s a lot of small sales throughout the day. We aren't trying to get rich, just making a living and providing things the neighborhood needs. The market atmosphere is loud and messy, but it’s home to us. If you’re around Tonk Road, you can easily find us by the displays out front. We spend a lot of time organizing the little jars of beads and bottles of perfume. It’s a bit of a scramble when the market gets busy, but we manage to keep everything straight most of the time. We just enjoy being here.
