Gajendra Marbles

Gajendra Marbles is right in the thick of things in Jaipur. Our address is C/O Roop Singh Bhati at Jakhanhouse on Mehta Marg. It is near Hida Ki Mori in the Suraj Pole Bazar area, specifically Ramganj. If you have ever been to this part of the city, you know how crowded and loud it gets. There are rickshaws and carts everywhere. Our yard is filled with big slabs of marble. There is always a layer of fine white dust over everything. We try to sweep it up, but it comes back five minutes later. We do not have a fancy showroom with lights and mirrors. We just show the stone as it is. We talk to people about the thickness and the patterns. Most of the time, we are outside in the heat. We wear old clothes because the stone work is messy. Sometimes we have to move heavy pieces by hand, and it is hard on the back. We have a small office area where we sit down to write the bills and drink some tea. The tea comes in small glass cups from a shop down the street. It is very hot and sweet. We do not do any big advertising. People find us because they know we have been here for a long time. We just sell marble and help people get it onto their trucks. It is simple, honest work, and we are usually exhausted by the time we finally close up for the night.
