If you walk into Bapu Bazar, you will eventually find Anil Parnami & Co. This area is famous for its pink walls and the constant flow of tourists and locals. Our shop is tucked in among all that energy. Inside, it is a bit more quiet. We have a lot of paperwork and ledgers piled up on the desks. We handle different kinds of trade and business matters for people who come in. There is usually a pot of tea sitting somewhere and the sound of a ceiling fan clicking as it turns. We don't have a lot of fancy decorations on the walls, just some calendars and maybe a clock that is a few minutes fast. People come in to discuss their needs, and we sit down across from each other to figure things out. It is the kind of place where things move at a human pace. We take a lot of notes by hand. Sometimes the power goes out and we just open the door wider to let in the light from the street. Bapu Bazar is a great place to be because you see everyone. We have been here long enough that we know the other shopkeepers well. We spend most of the day talking to clients or filing away documents in the metal cabinets. It is practical work and it keeps us busy from morning till evening.
