You can find us on Sansar Chandra Road, near the City Center in Mukundgarh House. Our shop is easy to spot because of the stacks of black battery casings near the entrance. It’s a narrow place, but we pack a lot into it. There is always that sharp smell of battery acid and lead in the air, which you get used to after a while. We spend the day testing old batteries and charging up new ones on the racks. Most people come in because their car or tractor wouldn't start in the morning. They’re usually in a hurry, so we try to check things quickly. We have a lot of heavy lifting to do, moving those big lead blocks around. My clothes usually have a few small holes in them from the acid spills. It’s a bit messy, and our hands are almost always stained black by the end of the shift. The traffic on Sansar Chandra Road is loud, so we have to shout sometimes to be heard over the horns. We keep a few tools on the counter for cleaning terminals and tightening cables. It isn't a clean job, but it’s what we do. We’ve been at this spot for years and know most of the shopkeepers nearby. When the power goes out, we’re usually the ones people call first.
