You can find Vishnu Kirana Stores over in Gulati Market, on the main road near Madan Mahal Chowk in Jabalpur. This is a central spot, so we see all kinds of people throughout the day. The shop is filled with various household goods, from different types of rice to soaps and detergents. We have been here for a while, and the shop has seen the neighborhood change quite a bit. It’s a bit of a tight fit inside because we try to keep as much stock as possible on the shelves. Sometimes you have to squeeze past a crate of cold drinks to get to the back. We don't use any slick marketing or big signs to get people in. Most of our customers are locals who live nearby or people who pass through Madan Mahal on their way to work. The street outside is always humming with the sound of cars and buses. Inside, we just focus on weighing things out and making sure the change is right. It’s a plain, simple business. We don't have air conditioning, just the breeze from the door and a few old fans on the ceiling. It can get tiring standing on the hard floor all day, but it’s what we do. We like being part of the daily routine for the families in this part of Jabalpur. We hope to keep the doors open for a long time, even as the buildings around us get taller and newer every year.
