Making ice cream is a lot colder than people think. We are over in Mahadev Nagar in Islampur, part of the Walwa taluka. Our building at Classic Ice Cream is mostly filled with big freezers and mixing vats. It stays pretty chilly inside even when the sun is beating down on the metal roof outside. We start early in the morning when the milk trucks arrive. It’s a messy job sometimes, with spills and having to wash down the floors constantly. We don't have a big fancy parlor where people sit and eat; we mostly focus on the production side of things. The neighborhood of Mahadev Nagar is quiet for the most part, except for our delivery vans coming and going. We have been doing this for a while, and we know the locals well. Sometimes the kids come by hoping for a mistake or a sample, which we sometimes give out if the work is caught up and the boss isn't looking. It is hard work, standing on your feet all day and moving heavy crates into the cold storage. Your fingers get numb after a while from handling the frozen packs. But it’s good to see the finished product going out to the shops. We just try to keep the machines running and the temperatures low enough. It is a simple life making things people like to eat, even if it is a bit cold.
