Islampur is a small place compared to the big cities, and the college reflects that. We are located right in the heart of this part of West Bengal. Students come from the surrounding villages, sometimes traveling a long way by bus or even walking on the dirt paths. The college campus has some trees and a bit of open space, which is nice when the weather is good and there’s a breeze. The buildings are simple, mostly just concrete blocks with many windows. I’ve been working in the administration here, and there’s always a pile of forms to go through. During admission time, the lines stretch out of the doors and into the yard. It gets quite dusty when the wind blows across the open ground. The students spend their free time sitting under the trees talking or sharing a meal. We have a library that is usually very quiet, filled with old books that smell like paper and dust. The classrooms are large but the furniture is old and sometimes the chairs wobble when you sit down. It’s a quiet life here most of the time, except when there are exams or some college event. We don’t have much of the modern stuff you see in city colleges, but the students here are just trying to get their degrees. It’s a local college serving the people of this district and trying to keep things moving forward year after year.
