About Spice World – Food & Beverages in Irinjalakuda
Our business, Spice World, is located right near NH-47 in Komadi. If you are driving on the highway, you might miss us if you’re going too fast. We are in a small building with a blue roof. I’ve been working here for three years now. The air inside is always thick with the smell of ground spices. Sometimes it makes you sneeze all day long. We don't have air conditioning, so we just leave the big doors open to catch the breeze. The problem is that the dust from the road comes in too. It’s a constant battle to keep the floors clean. We spend a good hour every evening just sweeping up. We handle everything from raw spices to the finished powder. The grinders are quite old and they make a lot of noise. You can’t really have a conversation when they are running. We mostly just use hand signals. It’s a basic operation. We don’t have a fancy office or a receptionist. If someone comes by, one of us just wipes our hands on our apron and goes to talk to them. We’ve had a few rainy days where the road gets flooded and the trucks can’t reach us. We just sit and drink tea then. It’s not a high-pressure environment. We just do our work and hope the machines don't break down. Komadi is a quiet place except for the highway noise. We are just regular people making spice mixes for the local market.
