Choithram Netralaya

Out here in Shri Ram Talawali, things are a bit quieter than in the middle of the city. We’ve got the eye center set up to help people who are having trouble seeing clearly. The building is simple enough. Inside, there are those big machines we use to look at eyes, and they take up a fair bit of room in the exam area. We have benches for patients to sit on while they wait for their turn. A lot of folks come in from the nearby areas, sometimes traveling a good distance. We see people of all ages, from kids who can't see the blackboard at school to the older ones who are struggling with cataracts. There’s a lot of sitting and waiting, especially when we’re doing eye drops that need time to work. We usually have a bottle of water sitting on the desk and maybe some old newspapers for people to flip through. The light in the rooms has to be kept low for some of the tests, so it can feel a bit dark inside even when it’s bright outside. We just go through the day, one patient after another, checking charts and making notes. It’s a practical place, focused on getting people back to their homes with better sight. Sometimes the printer jams when we’re trying to give someone their results, but we get it sorted eventually.
