Greenfield Spices

If you drive along the Munnar-Kumily Highway, you’ll find us at Vandanmettu. Greenfield Spices is right there on the side of the road. Being in this part of the country, we are surrounded by greenery and the weather is often a bit damp or misty. Our building is a simple structure where we handle the spices. The smell inside is very strong, mostly cardamom and pepper. It sticks to your clothes by the end of the day. We get a lot of travelers passing through on the highway who see our sign and pull over. It’s a busy road, especially during the tourist season. We spend a lot of time sorting through the harvests and getting things ready for sale. It’s not a high-tech facility. We do a lot of things by hand because that’s how we’ve always done it. The floor is usually covered in some bit of spice dust or another. We don’t have a fancy office, just a small desk in the corner where we keep our records. It can get a bit cold in the winters up here in the hills, so we usually have some tea going. It’s a quiet life in Vandanmettu when the traffic dies down at night. We just focus on the spices and making sure they are dried properly. It’s a lot of manual work but it keeps us busy through the year.
