Alwin Paints is right in Gandhi Square in Kattappana. It’s a busy little corner. I chose this spot because everyone passes through the square. We have all sorts of paint cans stacked up. It’s not a very big shop, so it gets crowded quickly. I spend a lot of time mixing colors for people. Kattappana is a hilly area, and the weather can be a bit damp, so people are always painting their houses. I try to keep a variety of brands. It’s just me and sometimes a relative helping out. We don’t have a corporate office or anything. I just sit on a stool behind the counter. The square is always loud with traffic and people talking. I’ve gotten used to it over the years. I know most of the painters who work around here. They come in early to get their supplies. Gandhi Square is the heart of the town, I think. I like being right in the middle of it. Sometimes the floor gets stained with different colors, but that’s expected in a paint shop. We don’t do any big promotions. People just know we are here. It’s an honest way to spend the day. I keep the shop open until late evening mostly because the light in the square is nice at that time. If you need me, I’m usually there cleaning the brushes or checking the stock. It’s just a regular paint store in a busy square.
