Karachi Bakery

Most people in the city know exactly where Road No.1 in Banjara Hills is located. That’s where we are. The smell of baking hits you before you even get to the front door. We spend our mornings surrounded by clouds of flour and bags of sugar. It’s a very busy shop. Customers come in all day long for biscuits and cakes. Some of them have been coming since they were little kids. We see them grow up and bring their own children. It’s nice to have that kind of connection with the neighborhood. The ovens are always hot and running. We have a lot of metal trays to wash at the end of the day. It’s not a glamorous job. Your clothes always end up smelling like vanilla or butter. We try to keep the shelves full, but it’s hard. Sometimes we run out of the popular fruit biscuits by the afternoon. People get disappointed, but we just bake more the next morning. The traffic on Road No.1 is a nightmare during rush hour. We just ignore it and focus on the dough. It’s a simple life for us. We don't use big words to describe our bread. It’s just bread. We like seeing someone take a bite and smile. That’s really the point of the whole thing. Banjara Hills has changed a lot. It’s much fancier now with big glass buildings. But inside the bakery, things stay pretty much the same. We like the tradition of it.
