Down here in Guduru Mandalam, life moves a bit differently than in the big cities. Dharti Dredging And Infrastructure is run out of the place belonging to T. Venkata Ratnam’s son, right here in the Krishna District. We are surrounded by fields and water, which is probably why we ended up in the dredging business to begin with. There is always a canal that needs clearing or some land that needs preparing for a new project. It is dirty, hard work that leaves you tired by sunset, but it is what we know how to do. The machines are loud and they need constant looking after because the mud gets into everything. We don't have a big corporate lobby or anyone in a suit answering the phones. Usually, it’s just one of the guys wiping grease off his hands to take a call. Being in a place like Gudur means everyone knows everyone, so you can't really hide if you do a sloppy job. We take the tractors and the dredging gear out to wherever the work is, across the district and sometimes further into Andhra Pradesh. It gets humid and the mosquitoes are a nightmare near the water, but that is just part of the deal. We keep the equipment maintained as best as we can and try to stay ahead of the rain. It’s a simple setup, but it works for us and the people who need things moved.
