Cherlapally is a long way from the city center, which makes it a bit quieter than other industrial zones, but Phase I is still quite active. Prem Indl Corporation is at Shed No 3. It’s a simple brick and tin structure. We have a small yard out front where we park the scooters and sometimes stack empty pallets. Inside, the space is divided into a work area and a small corner for the supervisor's desk. The roof is made of corrugated sheets, so when it rains, you can’t hear yourself think. We mostly deal with metal parts, so there’s always a clanging sound in the air. We don't have any fancy branding or expensive furniture. Our chairs are mismatched and the clock on the wall is five minutes fast. Most of the people working here have been with us for years, so we don't really have to explain much to each other anymore. We just get on with the daily tasks. Lunch is usually spent sitting on the loading dock if the weather is nice. We don't use any high-tech software; most of our notes are scribbled on a chalkboard or in a tattered notebook. It’s a practical way to run things. We make sure the parts are sized correctly and packed tightly before the transport truck arrives in the evening. That’s the whole routine, day in and day out. We have an old radio that plays local stations in the background while we work.
