The heat is the first thing you notice when you walk into Plot No. 103 in Panchasheela Colony. Being in Rangareddy Nagar, right in the Ida Gandhinagar part of Balanagar, we are in a very industrial neighborhood. Ram Charan Die Castings And Alloys is all about melting metal and pouring it into molds. It is heavy, hot work. The furnace is always running, and you can feel the vibration through the floor. We all have thick gloves and protective gear, but you still get used to the sweat. The walls are darkened by smoke and soot over time. We don't have any fancy decorations on the walls, just a calendar from three years ago and some safety posters that are peeling at the corners. The yard outside is full of old scrap metal and stacks of finished castings waiting to be picked up. Sometimes the neighbors complain about the noise, but that’s just how die casting is. We have a small crew, mostly guys who have been doing this for a decade or more. We don't use much technology besides the machines themselves. It's about knowing the metal and how it flows. When the shift ends, everyone is tired and covered in dust, but the work is done. It's a simple, tough way to make a living here, and we just keep at it day after day without much fuss.
