About Tantia Construction Ltd. – Metals & Minerals in Howrah
Setting up here in Bagnan near the telephone exchange was a practical choice for us. Biswajit and the rest of the crew handle things from the office at Ashok Chakraborty’s place. It’s a quiet enough spot in Howrah, though things get busy when the big equipment rolls in. We spend a lot of time looking at site plans and making sure the guys have what they need for the day's work. The weather in West Bengal can be a real pain for construction, especially during the monsoon when everything turns to mud. We’ve had to pull trucks out of the muck more times than I can count. Our day usually starts pretty early before it gets too hot to think. We grab some tea from the shop nearby and then get to it. There isn't much in the way of decorations in the office, just some maps on the walls and piles of invoices. We just focus on the task at hand, whether it's a bridge or a building. Some days are longer than others, especially when a delivery doesn't show up on time. We’ve learned to be patient with the local roads. It’s hard work, and we all go home tired with dust on our boots. We aren't here to make things look pretty on paper, just to get the structures built so they stay up. It is a long process from start to finish, but we keep at it.
