You can find Jm Leathers over at 33/2 A. K. Roy Choudhary Lane in Shibrpur. If you know the area, you know the lanes are a bit narrow and can get crowded with people and carts. Our workshop is tucked away there, right in the middle of it all. The first thing you notice when you walk in is the smell of the leather hides. It’s a strong, earthy scent that sticks to your clothes, but we don’t even notice it anymore after working here for so many years. We have these big, heavy wooden tables where we lay out the skins to check for marks or holes before we start cutting anything. It takes a lot of light to see the fine details, so we have some very bright bulbs hanging from the ceiling. We use various knives, mallets, and punches, and there’s usually a lot of hammering going on, especially in the busy afternoons. It’s definitely not a quiet place to work. Shibrpur is a busy part of town, and there's always noise from the street coming through the open windows. We keep our finished goods on some old metal racks in the back corner. They get dusty quite fast if we don't wipe them down every single morning. Sometimes the delivery vans have a hard time getting down the lane, so we have to carry the heavy boxes out to the main road ourselves. It’s a lot of physical labor, and our hands are usually stained with dye or glue. We just keep at it, one piece at a time until we finish the day.
