Kolkata Municipal Corporation

We've been here in Howrah for a long time. People think the corporation is just a big building, but it's really just us trying to keep things running. The 711101 area is busy and there's always something to do. Some days the phones don't stop ringing about the roads or the lights. It's hard work and we don't always get it right. My desk is covered in papers. Most of us grew up around here so we know the streets well. We deal with everything from taxes to fixing things that break. It’s not a fancy job. The office gets hot in the summer and the fans just move the air around. We see a lot of people every day, some upset and some just needing a form stamped. That’s just how it goes here in the municipal office. We try to help when someone walks in. Sometimes the paperwork takes too long but that’s the way the system is built. We aren’t some big faceless company, just people living in Howrah doing our shifts. We’ve seen the city change a lot over the years. Some old buildings are gone and new ones are up. We just keep coming in at nine and staying until the work is mostly done for the day. It’s a lot of files and a lot of talking. It is honest work and we do it every single day.
