Dey Variety

If you head down to Amta Bazar, you will find Dey Variety right there on Station Road. It’s a very busy and crowded part of Howrah, especially when it’s market day. We sell all sorts of things, which is why we call it a variety store. One shelf might have plastic buckets and the next one will have bags of salt and sugar. It is a bit of a jumble sometimes, but I know exactly where everything is hidden in the piles. The floor is just plain concrete and the walls are covered with hooks for hanging snacks and spice packets. Since we are near the station, we get a lot of people who are in a big hurry to catch their train. I have learned to be quick with the change and getting things bagged up. The air is always full of the smells of the bazaar, like fish and vegetables and the smell of the buses. It’s not exactly a quiet place to spend the day, but I like the energy around here. I have had this shop since my children were very small, and now they are all grown up. I don't see any reason to change how I do things. We just keep the basics in stock and try to help people find what they need. It’s a good, honest way to make a living, and the people of Amta are good neighbors.
