If you head into the New Grain Market and look for Shop No. 180, that’s where we are. Suraj Bhan Satish Kumar isn’t a fancy place with glass doors or big signs. It is a working shop where we handle bags of grain and a lot of messy paperwork. The floor is almost always covered in loose seeds and the phone doesn't seem to stop ringing. We spend most of our time talking to farmers and buyers, just trying to keep things moving. It gets really loud and chaotic in the market when it's harvest time. You have to shout just to be heard over the tractors and the other traders nearby. We have a few guys who help us with the heavy lifting, and they have been with us for a long time. We know most of the people on this row of shops by name. Sometimes we stop for a quick cup of tea and swap some news in the afternoon. This isn't the kind of job where you stay clean. You get dusty, your hands get rough, and you go home pretty tired every night. We take care of the stock and make sure nothing sits around getting damp or ruined. The market has its own way of working, and we just follow along with it. Some days are better than others depending on the prices. We just keep the shop open and handle whatever comes through the door. It’s been our life for years.
