Shastri Market is a busy place to be, and our shop, Gopiram Jagdish Prasad & Co., has been right here across from the railway station for years. You can hear the announcements from the station all day while we’re working. We are also quite close to the G H S Government College, so there are always students and people walking past our doors. It’s an old-style shop, the kind where you know where everything is even if it looks a bit messy to an outsider. We deal with all sorts of people, from students to travelers and the regulars who live in the market area. We open up the shutters early and don’t close until late in the evening. It’s a family-run kind of thing, so there’s usually one of us behind the counter drinking tea and waiting for the next person to walk in. We don’t spend money on big signs or anything like that. The name is on the wall and that’s enough. The market gets very crowded during the festivals, and it’s hard to even move, but that’s just part of being in this location. We’ve seen a lot of shops come and go, but we’ve stayed put. It’s a simple life, just keeping the shelves stocked and talking to the neighbors. We don't need much more than that to be happy with the day's work. We have been part of this community for so long it feels like home.
