Pachori Bricks

In the village of Bankhedi, everyone pretty much knows what everyone else is doing. Our brick business is right here in the taluka, and we’ve been part of the landscape for a while. There isn't a corporate office or anything like that. It’s just the land where we make the bricks and the space where we stack them up. The ground is always covered in dust and soil. We work according to the seasons mostly. When it’s the dry season, we are moving as fast as we can to get the bricks ready. During the monsoon, things slow down a lot and we mostly just wait it out. It’s a lot of manual labor. There aren't many fancy machines, so it’s mostly about the strength of the workers and getting the timing right. The bricks are stacked in high rows that sometimes lean a bit, but they stay up. People come by on their bikes or in their small trucks to pick up what they need for a wall or a new room. We don't do much talking; we just show them what’s available in the stacks. Sometimes we sit under the shade of a tree to escape the afternoon heat and talk about the day's work. It’s a simple, honest way to make a living in the village. We aren't trying to be anything big, just a place where you can get bricks when you need them.
