About Prarambho Mudra Handlooms Handicrafts – Art & Craft in Hooghly
You can find us at No. 303 in the Monami Apartment building, which is on Road 6 over by Pandit Kali Nath Battala Bhattacharya Lane. It’s a bit of a mouthful to say the address, but once you’re here, it’s a quiet enough place to work. We have looms set up in the rooms, and you can hear the rhythm of the wood clicking all day long as we work the threads. It's a slow process, making these handlooms and handicrafts, but we don’t like to rush things. We have piles of yarn and thread in different colors stacked up against the walls in the hallway. The apartment isn't huge, so we have to stay organized, or we’d run out of space to move around. A few of us sit and work together, talking about small things while our hands stay busy. It’s a craft that takes a lot of patience, and sometimes your eyes get tired from looking at the patterns for too long. We don't have a storefront on the street, so we mostly work on orders that people have placed beforehand. The neighborhood is full of old houses and narrow lanes, which feels right for the kind of traditional work we do. We just want to keep the old ways going as best as we can without making too much of a fuss. It’s just us, some thread, the looms, and a lot of time spent weaving things together.
