Out in Serampore, specifically at 12, Gobinda Chandra Bhattacharjee Lane, you’ll find Sea Meridian Shipping Services Pvt. Ltd. It’s a bit of a distance from the main city of Kolkata, but it’s a good spot in the Hooghly district. We are involved in the shipping side of things. Most of what we do involves coordinating with ports and vessels. It’s a lot of back-and-forth communication. The office is located in a pretty traditional area. It’s not a high-tech building, just a regular place where we have our computers and files. We’ve been here long enough that the neighbors know us. Sometimes the rainy season makes things difficult with the roads, but we manage to keep things moving. The people working here are mostly from around the Serampore area. We aren't trying to be a massive global corporation. We just focus on the shipping tasks at hand. It can be stressful when a ship is delayed or there is a problem at the port, but that is just part of the job. We don't use big words to describe what we do. We just help move goods across the sea. It’s a living. Most days are just about checking emails and making sure the paperwork is correct for the customs guys. It’s steady work and we are happy to be doing it here in West Bengal. It is not always easy, but we have a good rhythm going in Hooghly.
