You can find Jay Shree Shyam down West Khan Pukur By Lane in the Angus area of Hooghly. It’s a narrow lane, so you can’t really bring a big car down here. Most people come on foot or by cycle. The shop is small and a bit dark inside, but we know where everything is kept. We’ve been in this part of Hooghly for many years now. My wife and I manage the store together. We sell a mix of things, from snacks to small hardware items. It’s a bit of a jumble on the shelves. Sometimes we lose track of what we have in the back room and find it months later. The neighborhood is very close-knit, so if someone is short on cash, we usually just write it down in a ledger and they pay us back later. We don’t have any fancy marketing or even a big sign. Most people just know us as the shop near the end of the lane. The weather gets very humid here, and the dampness affects the walls, so we have to be careful about where we stack the paper goods. It’s a lot of manual work, lifting heavy crates and bags every day. We close up around nine at night when the street lights come on. It’s a simple business, and we’re happy just keeping it going. We just do our best to keep everything in stock for the neighbors.
