About Dhaniakhali Saree Musium – Textile in Hooghly
We are located in Somospur village, right near the Rupbani Cinemahal in Dhaniakhali. It is a bit out of the way for some, but for those who value the local weaving tradition, it’s a common stop. We call it a museum because we have a lot of pieces that show the history of the Dhaniakhali style, but it’s really just our family shop. The building is old and doesn't have any of the modern features you’d find in a city store. We have wooden counters and shelves that have been here for decades. The sarees we have are mostly the traditional cotton ones that this area is famous for. We work directly with the weavers who live in the surrounding villages. They bring their work to us, and we help get it to the people who appreciate it. The cinemahal nearby is a good landmark for people who are visiting from outside the area. It’s a quiet life here most of the time. We spend our days showing the different borders and weaves to anyone who drops by. We don't have a website or a social media page. We just rely on the quality of the cotton and the word of mouth from people who have bought from us before. Sometimes we just sit outside and watch the people go by. It’s a slow pace, but it suits the kind of work we do. We just want to keep the local weaving alive for the next generation.
