Dainik Rice

Up here in Benepata, Pandua, life moves at its own pace. We are located in the Hooghly district, and rice is what we know best because that is what everyone grows and eats around here. The building isn't anything special to look at, just a sturdy place to keep the grain dry and safe from the pests. We spend a lot of time checking the quality of the batches that come in. You can tell a lot about the harvest just by looking at the color and the size of the grains. My boots are usually a bit muddy because the ground around here gets soft when it rains, and I am always moving between the storage area and the front. We have a small area where we sit and drink tea when there is a break in the work. It is mostly local people who come to us, and we don't really do much in the way of advertising or things like that. People just know where we are. The humidity can be a bit much in the summer months, which makes the work feel heavier than it is. We keep the records in a big old book with yellowing pages because that is how we have always done it. It is just a basic business keeping people fed with what grows in our own fields. The birds often try to get into the bags if we leave them open too long.
