Shri Ram Generator is over in Himmat Nagar, specifically in Prantij. The area is Sabarkantha and we are near the Multani Dhandha part of Paharganj. It is a bit of a trek to get here if you aren’t from around this side of town. The shop is full of engines and the smell of diesel is pretty much everywhere. It’s not a place where you want to wear your best clothes because there is oil on almost every surface. We spend most of the day taking things apart and putting them back together. When the power goes out in the neighborhood, that’s when everyone starts thinking about us. We have old generators sitting in the corner for parts and newer ones that we are currently working on. It’s loud when we test the motors, so we usually have to shout to hear each other over the noise. My hands are usually stained black by noon. It's just me and a couple of guys who grew up around machinery. We don't do much fancy talking, just look at the machine and try to see why it won't start. The weather gets really dry here, which makes the dust stick to everything in the garage. We’ve been at this for years, so we’ve seen just about every kind of breakdown you can imagine. People just drop their equipment off and we get to work when we can. It’s just how we do things.
