New Singhai Vastralaya

If you walk through the Cloth Market near the Clock Tower, you’ll find us. New Singhai Vastralaya has been here for years. It’s a busy area, especially during the wedding season. The shop is filled with rolls of fabric and different types of clothing. It smells like new cotton and starch. We spend our days unfolding and folding things back up. Customers can be picky, but that's part of the trade. My father used to say that a good piece of cloth speaks for itself. We don't do much talking, we just show what we have. The Clock Tower is a good landmark because people always get lost in these narrow lanes. It’s loud outside with all the rickshaws and people shouting. Inside, we try to keep it a bit calmer. We have shelves reaching all the way to the ceiling. Sometimes we need a ladder to get the stuff from the top. It’s a family-run kind of thing. My cousins and I take turns at the counter. Lunch is usually brought from home and eaten in the back room. We know most of the regular shoppers by name. They’ve been coming to us since they were kids. It’s not a big fancy showroom. It’s just a traditional cloth shop where we try to give people what they need for a fair price. We’re usually open until late evening when the market starts to quiet down a little bit. We see a lot of faces every day and we like that.
