Our mill is on Jakhal Road, right near the Dharam Kanta. Having the weighbridge so close is lucky because it makes things easier when the big trailers arrive. At Om Rice Mills, the day usually starts with the sound of heavy engines idling outside. We spend hours unloading the raw paddy and then watching it go through the cleaners. It is a repetitive process, but you have to pay attention or something will jam up. The proximity to Jakhal Road means there is a lot of wind that blows through the open doors, which is nice when it’s hot but not so great when it’s raining. We have a small room where we keep the samples, but most of the space is taken up by the big piles of grain. The men working here are mostly from the nearby villages, and they know the work well. There is a lot of heavy lifting, so everyone stays pretty fit. We don't use any fancy technology; it’s mostly just mechanical stuff that we can fix ourselves with a wrench and some grease. We don't have any big slogans or goals other than finishing the work we have for the day. If the bags are filled and the trucks are gone by sunset, we call that a good day. It is just a practical, local business where we do things the old way.
