At Swar and Vani Speech and Hearing Clinic, we spend our days listening to people. It’s a bit ironic, I guess. We deal with hearing aids and speech practice, so the rooms have to be tucked away from the street noise. I started this place because I noticed a lot of people were struggling to follow conversations at family dinners. It’s not a fancy medical center with marble floors. It’s just a couple of rooms with some testing equipment and some toys for the kids who come in. Sometimes the kids get a bit loud, but that’s part of the job. We have some posters on the walls about how ears work, mostly to fill the space. The chair in my office squeaks if you lean back too far, I keep meaning to oil it but I always forget. People come from all over the area because there aren't many places like this around. We don't use big words to explain things. We just show how the devices work or how to make certain sounds better. It takes a lot of patience, both for us and the people coming in. We keep a pot of water in the corner for anyone who gets a dry throat. It’s a simple setup, but it works for us and the folks who visit. We usually close up around six, unless someone is running late. The sign outside could use a fresh coat of paint, but it's still readable.
