Our shop is located over at Plot No. 1026 in the Gidc Estate. If you walk by, you’ll probably hear the saws running or see a layer of sawdust on everything. That’s just how it is working with wood all day long. We spend most of our time cutting down boards or putting together crates and pallets for the other businesses around here. It gets noisy, and sometimes the machines act up, which means someone has to spend an hour fixing a belt instead of cutting wood. We aren't a big factory with hundreds of people, just a small crew that knows how to handle a hammer and a saw. The wood comes in on big trucks, and we have to stack it carefully so it doesn't warp in the humidity. Some days are slower than others, which gives us a chance to sweep up the floor, though it never stays clean for long. We’ve been in this spot for a bit now, and we know most of the other guys working in the Gidc. It’s a lot of manual labor, and your hands get pretty rough after a few years of this. We don’t mind it much. It’s steady work, and there's a certain feeling of finishing a batch of orders before the sun goes down. We just keep our heads down and do the work that needs doing every single day to make sure we keep up with the schedule.
