Conceria Montebello

We are working out of No. 90 in Udhyog Vihar Phase 1. This part of the city is always moving, and we are right in the thick of it at Conceria Montebello. The smell of leather is the first thing you notice when you walk through the door. It’s a strong, earthy scent that sticks to your clothes by the end of the shift. We have some heavy machinery for processing the hides, and they make a steady thumping sound all day long. It can be quite loud, so we’ve all learned to speak a bit louder to hear each other. The floor is often wet in certain areas because of the tanning process. We wear heavy boots and aprons to keep ourselves dry and clean. It’s not the kind of job you do if you’re afraid of getting your hands dirty. We spend a lot of time checking the texture and color of the skins under the lights. Every piece of leather is a bit different, so it takes some patience to get things right. Phase 1 is a busy area, and there’s always a truck waiting outside to load or unload something. We take our breaks in the small yard out back where it’s a bit quieter. It’s a tough environment, but there is a lot of satisfaction in seeing the finished leather ready to go out. That is our routine.
