Even though the name says Jammu, a lot of what we do happens right here in the village of Chhani Tola. The place belongs to Waryam Singh, who is the son of S. Dalip Singh. It’s a family-run spot out in the Gurdaspur district. To get here, you have to follow the road past the post office in Jangal. It’s a very rural area, surrounded by fields and a lot of greenery. We don’t have a big factory or anything like that on this site. It’s more of a place where we manage the local side of things and keep track of what’s going where. My father and his father before him were always working with the land or local trade, so we just kept that going in our own way. The air is fresh out here, but the roads can be a bit rough when it rains. We spend a lot of our time talking to people from the nearby villages. It’s a slow pace of life compared to the big cities, but we like it that way. We keep our records in big ledgers and try to make sure everything is in order. It’s not a high-tech operation. It’s just a group of us working out of a building that’s been part of the family for years. We know the local postman and everyone in the village, so it’s a very close-knit way to do business.
