Chanderi Sarees Palaks Handlooms

You can find us on Rajghat Road in Pranpur, right near the bus stop in the Dhamasiya Market area. It’s a busy little stretch of Chanderi where the buses are always pulling in and out, kicking up a bit of dust. We’ve got our handlooms set up here at Chanderi Sarees Palaks Handlooms, and the work is pretty steady. It’s not a quiet job. The looms make a rhythmic thudding sound that you get used to after a while, though visitors always find it a bit loud. We spend our days sorting through silk and cotton, making sure the patterns are going where they should. Pranpur is a place where a lot of people do this kind of work, so we’re surrounded by neighbors who understand the craft. We don't have a fancy showroom with glass cases. The sarees are usually just stacked on wooden shelves or lying on the work tables. Sometimes we have to stop work because the light isn't good enough or we're waiting for more yarn to arrive from the market. It’s a very manual process, and our hands often have stains from the dyes we use. We don't use any big machines or computers to do the weaving. It’s just us and the wooden frames, taking it one thread at a time while the world goes by outside on Rajghat Road.
