If you're driving down Calicut Road in Gudalur, you might pass our place at 11/363D. We are a group of farmers from around this area. Gudalur is a busy spot, and being on the main road helps us move our produce a bit faster. We aren't a big corporation. Most of us have been working the soil since we were kids. This producer company is just our way of sticking together. We grow what the land allows, and around here, that can be a few different things. The weather in this part of the state can be unpredictable, with heavy rains sometimes washing out the roads. We spend a lot of our time talking about the soil and what fertilizer is working best. It’s not glamorous work. There’s mud on our boots and grease on our hands from the old tractors. We don't have a receptionist or a fancy lobby. You just walk in and find someone to talk to. Usually, there's a lot of activity when the harvest comes in and everyone is trying to get their stuff weighed and sorted. We try to help each other out with the costs because everything is getting more expensive lately. It’s a tough way to make a living, but it’s what we know. We just focus on the day-to-day tasks and try to keep the business side of things from getting too complicated for everyone involved.
