We are based out of Smt Suman Singh’s residence in Gayatri Nagar, which is over in the Kurnaghat area of Gorakhpur. It is a residential neighborhood, so it feels very different from a typical business district. You’ll see kids playing in the street and neighbors chatting over their fences while we are inside working. The office is really just a converted room in the house where we’ve set up some tables and a couple of computers. It gets a little cramped when more than three people are in there at once, but we make it work somehow. Gorakhpur can get quite humid, so we usually have the fan going at full speed all day long. We don’t have a big sign out front, so you really have to look for the house number to know you’ve arrived. Being in Gayatri Nagar means we are close to the local market, which is handy when we need supplies. The atmosphere is very informal; sometimes someone’s pet will wander into the room while we’re in the middle of a meeting. We focus on our daily tasks without much fuss. It’s a humble place, and that’s okay with us because we don’t need much to do our research and keep things moving. We’ve been in this spot for a while now and the locals are used to seeing us coming and going with our files and bags throughout the week. It works for us.
