Sketches and talking to laborers about where bricks should go takes up most of our time. Jarwal stays fairly quiet, which is a nice change from the chaos of the bigger cities. Being a designer and construction outfit means we have to balance two different worlds. One side is all about how things look on paper and the other side is about getting your hands dirty in the mud and dust. Rihan is usually around making sure things are moving along on the different sites. We don't have a receptionist or a coffee machine that makes fancy drinks. Usually, if you come by, we just offer you water or some chai from the shop nearby. We do a lot of residential work, helping families put up walls and roofs. It’s hard work, especially when the weather isn’t cooperating, but it feels good to see a building go up where there was nothing before. We don’t use big words to describe our daily routine. We just build houses and design spaces for people who live here in the community. It’s a practical business and we take it one day at a time, making sure the foundations are solid before we move to the next step of the project.
