If you’re driving down N.H.- 29 near Nandgunj, you’ll probably see the smoke from Sarswati Bricks Industries. We’re located right on the Main Road, not far from the Post Office. It’s a very busy spot with all the highway traffic going by. Sometimes the trucks honk so loud we can’t hear each other in the yard. We’ve been at this location for years, and most people in the village know us by name. The work is hard and repetitive, but there’s a certain rhythm to it. We dig the clay, mold it, and let the sun do its part before the kiln takes over. In the summer, the heat is almost too much to bear, especially when you’re standing near the fires. We drink a lot of tea and try to stay in the shade when the bricks are cooling. It’s not a glamorous business by any means. Our clothes are always stained with dirt, and the yard is never truly clean. But people around Nandgunj need building materials, and we’re right here on the main road to provide them. We don't spend money on fancy signs or anything. If the bricks are good, people come back, and that’s basically how we’ve stayed open. It’s just us, the mud, and the highway noise every single day. We don't have any big plans to change things, just keeping the kiln going as long as there is clay to use.
