Out here in Ward No 14 of Mahrajganj, things move at a different pace. Amit Kumar Rai & Company is located in this village in Ghazipur, and we are quite easy to find since we are right near the Hanuman Mandir. You can hear the temple bells in the morning when we open up. It is a small place, mostly just a room where we keep our records and a bit of storage area out back. The road gets a bit muddy when it rains, so we spend a lot of time cleaning the floors. Most of the people who come to see us are from the nearby villages. We know their names and their families. It is not like the big cities where nobody knows their neighbor. We mostly deal with local stuff and help out with whatever is needed in the district. Sometimes the internet is slow, so we do things the old-fashioned way with pens and ledgers. My uncle started this, and we just kept it going. It is honest work and it feels good to be part of the community here. On hot afternoons, we sit under the tree out front to stay cool. There is always someone passing by on a bicycle who wants to stop and chat for a bit. It is a quiet life, but we stay busy enough with the daily chores and keeping the books straight for the people.
