Shubham Provisional Stores. Our shop is on Abdul Aziz Road, 16/3, in Karol Bagh. It’s a very old part of the city and the streets are always full of people and rickshaws. We sell the basic things that every kitchen needs, like dal, spices, and cooking oil. The shop is narrow and the shelves go all the way to the ceiling. We have to use a ladder many times a day to reach the stuff at the top. It’s dusty work and our clothes usually end up covered in flour or spice dust by the end of the shift. We get our supplies from the big markets nearby and spend a lot of time weighing out portions for customers. Some people still want things wrapped in paper. We don't have a computer system; we just write everything down in a thick register. The wooden counter has been here since we opened and it’s worn smooth in some places. It gets very hot in the summer because the shop doesn't get much breeze. We have a small temple in the corner where we light incense every morning. It’s a steady kind of life, seeing the same neighbors every day and making sure we have enough stock of the essentials. We don't try to be anything other than a local grocery store.
