Garg Footwear

Garg Footwear is right on 32 Railway Road in Ashok Nagar. Being so close to the railway means we always hear the trains passing by, and the whole shop shakes just a little bit when the heavy ones go through. It’s a sound we don't even notice much anymore. We get a lot of people coming in right after they get off the train, looking for sturdy shoes for work. The shop is narrow and goes back quite a way. We have old fluorescent lights that flicker a bit when you first turn them on in the morning. We usually start the day with a cup of tea and a quick sweep of the doorstep. Railway Road is always dusty, so the sweeping never really ends. We have all kinds of boots and sandals. Some are quite heavy, others are just for wearing around the house. We don't have a computer system to track things; we just know what’s in stock by looking at the shelves. The chairs for customers are old and the vinyl is cracking a bit, but they work fine for a quick try-on. Ashok Nagar is a place where people know each other, so we spend half the day just chatting with people who walk by. It’s a good spot to be, even with the noise and the dust from the tracks. We have a small mirror on the floor that's a bit chipped at the corner, but people use it to see how their shoes look.
